Got any advice on buying a second hand moped or motorized scooter?
I am looking for one. I have about $1200 saved and I can get some more. I am looking for something that won't break down a lot or have a really loud muffler. What sort of stuff should I look for? What should I check for when I am looking at the thing? It is for a kid who is heading off to college. I have never bought this sort of thing before. I am looking on craigslist. Can I get an electric one? If I do how far will go before it will need to be charged up again? What is a good price for a moped?

That's cool you are getting a scooter. You need to find a scooter in good condition but it is possible to find a nice used one of course. You should look around different sites which advertise and sell scooters. Look at the brands like Honda,Yamaha,Suzuki those are one of the best brands with reliability there are cheap scooters which are made in china and look good value new but are actually poorly built and are a waste of your money. If you are buying a second hand scooter from a dealer ask if they will give you a Guarantee this will cover any faults if any do occur on you bike within a certain time free of charge. I got a Yamaha Majesty 125cc and its a great scooter.
The second major thing you need to look at is the engine there are two types of engines:
Two stroke: Use an oil mix in the petrol to lubricate the engine. (needs to be checked to prevent engine being seized. Some of the Vespa lx50 are two strokes. Two stokes are both light and have fast acceleration but have decreased fuel efficiently as there are only two strokes.
Four stroke: No noise,Heaver,Better fuel efficiently,No mixing the oil in the petrol or checking the auto lube system during servicing.
Get trusted mechanic to look over everything to make sure that it is in fully working order and also ask them to check the brakes as the brake pads wear down on scooters more quickly than other motorbikes due to this is the only method of stopping the bike.
Best of luck and ride safe and have fun also to tell you that L learners by law have to wear a special high visibility vest and if caught not wearing they may be given points on there license. If you have a full license this means you would not have to wear one. You should also get some good gear helmet and gloves and if you want you can get a jacket and trousers.
